Spiritual Renovation - Worship Series for Lent

The 40 days of Lent are not just a time of penitence – but a time of possibility. During this season we let go of what that which makes us hide from God and hide from each other. We are invited to open ourselves to communion with God who gives us the gift of forgiveness and gives us new birth and transformation. Lent is also a season of ritual and reality. Our rituals such as prayer, communion, ashes, meditation, and surrender move us to real transformation.

The theme for worship this Lenten season is, Spiritual Renovation. To renovate means: 1. to restore to good condition; to make new or as if new again; repair. 2. to reinvigorate; refresh; revive.

Consider what may need to be renovated in your soul. During this series we will make room for the Spirit to turn our apathy to passion, our envy to gratitude, our hunger to satisfaction, and our anger to courage.

Bridges District Revival – February 7, 2015
* here is Jane’s reflection of the Revival which was inadvertently left out of last week’s bulletin Reflecting upon the scripture from Esther 4:14-16, Esther was a courageous servant. She was the right person in the right place at the right time. God was with her to give her strength for the day and hope for all of tomorrow. Esther obeyed, fasted and prayed. She knows who she is and whose she is and who goes with her. Are we ready to step forward in faith to be who God made us to be and calls us to be? - Jane Yin

Bridges District Revival - February 7, 2015

Bridges District Superintendent Rev. Schuyler Rhodes opened the Fires of Revival worship at Fairfield First UM Church with a rousing welcome to the over 300 attendees. The full day event drew laity and clergy from a small number of the 95 churches in Bridges District.

We hope that by sharing a small part of our experience of that day, it will “nurture and grow all of us in our walk as disciples of Jesus”.

The morning and afternoon worships were filled with The Word and songs, in Cantonese, English, Fijian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Swahili, Tagalog, and Zulu. We even sang Kanisa Litajengua, “O, who will build the church now?” There was passionate preaching punctuated by a lot of Amen’s and handclapping. During the morning communion service, worshippers were invited to complete and leave a prayer card, “For such a time as this, I pray _ _ _ _ _ _ _”

I came away with thoughts from being in the Revival Leadership of Growing Disciples session, Three F’s. A disciple must have Fire, Faith and Fruits. I most certainly observed Fire, Faith and Fruits as many inspiring leaders, both lay and clergy showed their love and commitment for our church, our District and our Annual Conference. – Burt Yin

Kaleidoscope Bible/Text Study Process

Definition: “Mutual Invitation” is used to ensure that everyone who wants to share has the opportunity to speak. The leader or designated person shares first. After that person has spoken, he/she invites another to share. After the next person has spoken, that person is given the privilege to invite another to share. If you are not ready to share, you may “pass for now” and we will invite you to share later. If you do not want to say anything at all, you may “pass” and proceed to invite another to share. At the end of the sharing, time is set aside to respond or ask clarifying questions.

Process:
1. First Reading - Invite someone to read the passage. Take a moment of silence to capture a word, a phrase or image that stands out from the passage for you. Using Mutual Invitation, invite each person to share briefly his/her word, phrase, or image.
2. Second Reading - Invite someone to read the passage a second time. Take a moment of silence to answer a pre-defined reflection question (e.g., What does this story say to you about …). Using Mutual Invitation, invite each person to share briefly his/her answer.
3. Third Reading – Invite someone to read the passage. Take a moment of silence to answer the question, “What does God invite you to do, be, or change through this passage?” Using Mutual invitation, invite each person to share briefly his/her answer.
4. End the session by inviting participants to join hands in a prayer circle. Invite participants to complete the following sentences: “I thank God today …” and “I ask God today …” When a participant is done, he/ she signals to the next person by squeezing the hand of the person on the right. If a participant chooses not to share, he/she can simply pass by squeezing the hand of the person on the right. When the pulse comes back to the leader, the leader invites everyone to join in the saying the Lord’s Prayer.
