English Ministry News and Notes 8-7-11

*Summer Program is Wrapping Up - Our 9 week summer program will soon
wrap up on Aug. 21st. On the last "official" day, Aug. 19th, we will be headed for
Crab Cove for our final field trip and celebration. You can pitch in once again by
ensuring the program is supplied with a wonderful picnic lunch. A sign up will go
around today. You are also invited to get a "taste" of the summer program on
Sunday, Aug. 21st at 3:00 p.m. for a special concert and closing program.
*Street Fest Prep! The annual Chinatown Street Fest is taking place on Aug.
27th and 28th. After a brief joint worship at 9:30 a.m., we will get ready to open
our doors to welcome children and families for a host of wonderful activities. We
want to be signs of God's love and welcome in Chinatown. Please keep an eye
out for how you can be involved!
*Donation Request from Asian Health Services (AHS) ~ AHS is in need of
financial support to purchase pill boxes for their patients. Pill boxes are effective
for health management especially those who take multiple medications. AHS requests
$500 to purchase 3,000 pill boxes. CCUMC has partnered with AHS in the
past to purchase critical items, such as aerochambers (to aid asthma patients) and
canes (to assist patients with their mobility.)
The Missions Ministry Team is campaigning to fund raise throughout August.
One of the fun ways is to gather change (or dollar bills) we have around the
house, put them in an empty pill bottle and bring it to church each Sunday to offer during worship. Let's join together in this very worthwhile project. Thank you for sharing generously. Connect with Pastor Emily, Becky or Jane if you have
any questions.
*Gum Moon Women's Residence Benefit Dinner - You are invited to support
Gum Moon on Friday, Aug. 19, at Far East Cafe in San Francisco. Gum Moon
was started by the Methodist church in 1868 as a refuge for Chinese immigrant
women. It continues to provide women's and children's social services. Hors
D'oeuvres and silent auction start at 5:30pm;; dinner, entertainment, and live auction
start at 6:30pm. Tickets are $65/person (church rate). Contact Derek Lang
or Steve Chan by Sunday, Aug. 7, to RSVP.
*Asian Health Services Annual Gala - You are invited to support AHS on Saturday,
Sept. 24, at Oakland Marriott City Center. AHS is a comprehensive health
center that provides medical care, health education, insurance counseling, and client
advocacy to the underserved Asian Pacific Islander population in Alameda
County. Program and dinner start at 7pm. Tickets are $100/person. CCUMC
would like to purchase a table together. Contact Derek Lang or Steve Chan by
Sunday, Aug. 28, to RSVP.
